Project mention: Why does part of the Windows 98 Setup program look older than the rest? | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-04-09SerenityOS replicates that look and feel. It is also implemented in a dialect of C++ that adheres to some of the good parts of C++98: https://serenityos.org

Puter is a cloud personal computer, and you can have all your files, apps, and games in one place accessible from anywhere at any time. So, basically a computer in your browser,
I've learned so much while making this project into my personal website (dustinbrett.com). It's made me a much better web developer as I have tried to emulate a desktop environment with pixel perfect accuracy using CSS, HTML & JavaScript.
Project mention: WiFi and Ethernet disconnecting on Asus X670E-E (AX210 / I225-V) | /r/archcraft | 2023-07-05I did try other kernels and what worked with me is to basically create a custom arch install. There seems to be a specific kernel/driver combination that works well with the WiFi/Ethernet drivers on my board and I can't just force some wifi drivers on the current kernel (I think 81.ucode is the latest one for the wifi but its using a version lower than that which I've already tested by force loading). For now I'm very much thankful that you can basically study and copy Archcraft's code/packages/configs (and my backups as well) and set it up on my custom arch install though it did take a few hours but I probably managed to restore 90% of my previous setup as everything is already on github. As a bonus, I did use u/adi1090x polybar-themes as well (https://github.com/adi1090x/polybar-themes) and study to integrate that pywal effect and basically add and integrate that on top of the default themes. But its just too cumbersome to edit one by one rather than having an already available distro so I'm still hoping for a permanent fix if any of you guys have an idea.
Yes, I used that before I tried to have a notification center. I grabbed this code from a unixporn master (probably https://github.com/rxyhn/yoru), which does not use naughty config. I will tried later to have a notification center using naughty config, if that may work. Thanks!
You are probably using Openbox as a window manager which does not provide this feature.. Replace Openbox with Xfwm4 (window manager of Xfce) or Kwin (window manager of KDE Plasma). See: https://github.com/lxqt/lxqt/wiki/ConfigWindowManagers
Project mention: AnLinux: Run Ubuntu on Android without root access | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-08-01
Project mention: Is there a cross-platform graphics library that can run without X or wayland that runs on the BSD's bare-metal? | /r/BSD | 2023-12-08Something like this ? https://arcan-fe.com/
Lots of what the article talks about pertains to the difference between a 'full DE' and 'just a WM'. Gnome and KDE fall in the first category. They have a notification system, lockscreens, app launcher, etc by default. Hyprland doesn't. It puts windows on your screen and allows you to control their layout, everything beyond that, you can add yourself.
This article mentions dunst for notifications, Rofi for app launchers, Waybar for a status bar, swaylock for screen locking, ... I've been having a great time using just AGS [0]. AGS, at its core, is a framework to write all of those tools. It is based on the same technology that Gnome Shell uses, i.e. GJS. You can build up all of the widgets you want and need using Gtk and replace all of the tools I mentioned before. But be warned: AGS only provides you with the libraries you need, you'll still need to build the UI yourself. Unless you copy someone else's configuration of course ;)

Oh yeah, no. Multiple entire desktop environments with significant popularity (Cinnamon, MATE) owe their existence today to how universally hated GNOME 3 was, and how obstinant and intolerant the GNOME developers were towards differing opinions that challenged their "vision".
In fact, the same thing is sorta playing out even right now with GTK4 and other GNOME stuff, though I think with somewhat less public spectacle but arguably even larger development efforts behind it:

so I picked EOS, with KDE Plasma because I found something called Konsave and they said KDE Plasma is the most customized DE, so I'm sold.
