The game is still running in the background (with audio and everything). In fact there is no game-suspend functionality at all, only having the device fully going to sleep actually pauses the game.
For people that like to tinker a bit, you can install Decky Loader and the "Pause Games" plugin that can suspend games, even automatically on focus loss.

I assume I am not the only one getting these random occurrences of crackling and popping audio after waking the deck from sleep into an already open game? The crackling and popping also happens with any audio device I connect to the 3.5mm headphone jack. Nothing but restarting the game fixes it.
