I think it’s also the design philosophy. JuMP and ForwardDiff are great success stories and are packages very light on dependencies. I like those.
The DiffEq library seems to pull you towards the SciML ecosystem and that might not be agreeable to everyone.
For instance a known Julia project that simulates diff equations seems to have implemented their own solver

A couple of sources for climate-related open data is OpenClimateData.net which is a curated list of sources for open emissions and climate agreements data that are made public by various NGOs and the UN. Another great source for open data is this GitHub repo by Dr. Kasia Kulma, as per her bio a data scientist focused on using data for good. The repo is extensive and not only does it offer open data, but many APIs and open source projects as well. Check out the repo’s README to see the long list of links.
I'm working on a clause for my business that would restrict the use of my software by entities that directly or indirectly support or promote fossil fuel usage, and I would love to get some input from HN community on how to draft it effectively.
Here's the draft clause:
“The use of the software is strictly prohibited by any company or entity whose primary or significant activity contributes directly or indirectly to the exploration, production, expansion, or support of fossil fuel resources —explicitly including oil, natural gas, and coal— and related infrastructure.”
A second part could be added to explicit the prohibited activities:
“This includes, but is not limited to, companies engaged in oil and gas exploration, logistical support for fossil fuel extraction, management and operational services for existing fossil fuel production facilities, and initiatives aimed at increasing the output of fossil fuel resources. The prohibition extends to the marketing, promotion, or advertising of such activities, provision of services, technical support, or resources to directly involved entities in the fossil fuel sector, financial organizations funding or investing in related projects or infrastructures. Further, it encompasses entities that consume substantial quantities of fossil fuels and do not exhibit a verifiable commitment to significantly reduce such consumption within an established timeframe.”
The inspiration partly comes from the Climate Strike Software License[1], but I'm aiming for something more encompassing.
I've written more about this on my blog[2], but here, I'm specifically looking for your expertise on the legal and practical aspects of such a clause.
What are your thoughts? How could this be improved?

Project mention: Most Earth system models are missing element of future climate puzzle | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-01-19As an engineer but not a climate scientist, it is really difficult to make sense of these models. They come in at least three levels of complexity, where simpler ones are used to verify the output of the more complex ones.
