SaaSHub
SaaSHub - Software Alternatives and Reviews. SaaSHub helps you find the best software and product alternatives
Kobos[1] and Pocketbooks[2] are a lot more open than Kindles. AFAIK you can transfer .epub files into both devices and these epubs are perfectly readable via the stock OS. If for some reason you find the stock proprietary OS lacking, you can install an open source one like KOreader [3] or Plato[4]
Of course you want a good way of organizing epubs pdfs mobi, and like has already been mentioned Calibre[5] is a great option.

Project mention: Tree-shaking, the horticulturally misguided algorithm | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-04-13The big utility of WASM for me, like OP hints at, is bringing things that would be infeasible to port to the web to it, like, say https://pgaskin.net/kepubify/ and other conversion tools (eg ffmpeg-wasm). Much preferable to downloading something or uploading a file to some random person’s server
Project mention: InkBox OS – open-source, fully-functional standalone OS for Kobo's eReaders | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-06-27https://github.com/Kobo-InkBox/inkbox#readme appears to be the non-ddns.net version, and is GPLv3
Project mention: How to convert Kobo dictionaries to Kindle supported format (FR-FR specifically), for side loading into the latter? | /r/Calibre | 2023-12-09I just stumbled across Kobo dictionaries, but none in a format which could be imported into Calibre, for further upload to Kindle. Copying the actual files or directories obtained by extraction of one of the Kobo dictionaries, into the documents directories of Kindle (as I've done to Littré and Roberts, to make them avail in the dictionary settings of Kindle) leads nowhere, either, so I am pretty much stuck.
Project mention: FBInk: FrameBuffer eInker, print text and images to an eInk Linux framebuffer | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-01-26
Project mention: Rakuten Kobo is partnering with iFixit to repair the Kobos | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-04-12You can simply use this website to send yourself books using the web browser on the kobo
https://send.djazz.se/
Or you can host your own "Kobo store" using calibre web and use that to sync your books
https://github.com/janeczku/calibre-web/wiki/Kobo-Integratio...
Yes, this is a problem for books with long titles and subtitles. I use kobopatch to increase the width available for book titles in the booklist https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4239375&postcount=844. Here are pics of some patches that I use.
On Kobo there is https://github.com/Rain92/UltimateMangaReader which works, but it’s sometimes hit or miss. If you plan on reading a lot of ongoings an Android based ereader would probably be better, then you’d have access to tachiyomi.
Project mention: Show HN: WarpBuild – x86-64 and arm GitHub Action runners for 30% faster builds | news.ycombinator.com | 2023-12-08Oh neat, I came across BuildJet the other day.
I was trying to cross-compile a side project (https://github.com/marcus-crane/october) for Linux arm64 but trying to do so would throw up some instruction set errors.
I had parted the idea of supporting Linux arm since Github has no runners but I threw in BuildJet and it spat out a working build with no problems!
Given it only needs to run on release, for a small open source project, being charged something like 1 cent per build is surprisingly reasonable compared to having no runner at all / having to spin up a self-hosted runner :)

Many changes, which for me mostly seem to be focused on rendering their iOS app useless. They've been removing features and it feels like the quality of article capture had degraded. I've moved to Omnivore which, aside Kobo integration (though there is an option for that too: https://github.com/Podginator/KoboOmnivoreConverter), beats Pocket in every aspect and has zero paywalled features being that it's FOSS.
