The Guy Who Invented the Internet's Front Door and Refused to Charge Rent
He's been trying to fix the parts of the web that went sideways once the ad-funded, walled-garden era took over, most visibly through the Solid project, which is an attempt to give people back control over their own data instead of it living in some platform's silo.

Meta data center water discharges suspended for contaminating water supply
How do I, as an ordinary person, benefit from Meta's data centers? I don't have any presence on Meta's platforms & the only time I even notice their existence is when someone sends me a text message via signal for some viral link on one of the social networks.
I think you're overestimating the relevance of these data centers for regular people. They can get by just fine w/ local¹ & a lot less environmentally destructive computational resources.

France dumps Zoom and Teams as Europe seeks digital autonomy from the US
>Sure, but can you be honest and admit that you don't have any of this yet?
Yes of course I can be honest. We don't have any of that. But if I'd sketch out a genuine European future in software to me it would look something like this. You have technologies like Tim Berner Lee's Solid[1] and social protocols like Mastodon/Bluesky/etc owned as public infrastructure and operated by its people. You could imagine each region of Europe having its own sovereign digital space federated with individuals owning their data, a genuine network mirroring the region as it is.
The big problem with this isn't just technical, it's mental. The user of today anywhere is a consumer. It's like turning a serf into a citizen. I don't think this is a five year vision, it's more like a 50 year program.

Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee says he is in a battle for the soul of the internet
I had to read what Berners-Lee's solution "Solid Protocol" was all about.
https://solidproject.org/
"Solid is a file system for the Web ... Solid lets you put documents into an online file system where you have control over which people, applications, and AI agents can read and edit them. Users have personal online data stores called Pods. Solid applications can read and write documents directly from your Pod. You choose which applications to use with your data rather than being locked into specific platforms."

A Social Filesystem
remoteStorage is still occasionally getting updates. https://solidproject.org is a somewhat newer, similar project backed by Tim Berners-Lee. (With its own baggage.)
I think of those projects as working relatively well for private data, but public data is kinda awkward. ATProto is the other way around: it has a lot of infra to make public data feasible, but private data is still pretty awkward.
It's a lot more popular though, so maybe has a bigger chance of solving those issues? Alternatively, Bluesky keeps its own extensions for that, and starts walling those bits off more and more as the VCs amp up the pressure. That said, I know very little about Bluesky, so this speculation might all be nonsense.
