Ask HN: Why isn't there a standard network audio protocol?
There is Airplay 1, which have several open source implementations. See for example:

Some whole house audio and presence detection use cases
Hi there, I have a 10 room streaming audio setup based on airplay which, due to Apple's discontinuation of Airport devices, I am converting over to a solution with a Pi zero DAC hat, which runs Shairport sync, though there are a lot of other similar projects for chromecast, DLNA, Yamaha MusicCast, etc.

remote controlled music player question
Give this a look if you are using Apple devices, it lets you connect via AirPlay to your Pi https://github.com/mikebrady/shairport-sync Additionally, if you are looking to set up a server with your own media and play that from any device connected on your network take a look at https://www.picoreplayer.org/. PiCore also supports the mentioned option for connecting via AirPlay with shairportsync

I want to make some dumb speakers into HomeKit speakers. Any suggestions?
If you’re handy with Linux or even just want to learn you can get a raspberry pi for about $35 and install this gem on there. https://github.com/mikebrady/shairport-sync/blob/development/AIRPLAY2.md some googling may be required but I got mine working fairly easily and love it!

Raspberry pi WiFi streaming to HiFi system
I don't have any control or library software built into my setup. I'm only running https://github.com/dtcooper/raspotify for Spotify Connect and https://github.com/mikebrady/shairport-sync for AirPlay streaming, so I have no need to interact directly with the Pi during normal usage. It's all controlled from my phone or PC natively.

Amazing sound quality, wtf!— Have you guys ever heard of these things called Compact Discs?!?!?!
Yes, that’s the idea of lossless codecs (ALAC, FLAC, etc.). Here, someone null tested Apple Music lossless over AirPlay vs CD rip: https://github.com/mikebrady/shairport-sync/issues/1205

Anyone try placing white noise over surround sound speakers (vs. Lectrofan)?
It runs on a spare computer in my apartment that I use as a server. All the speakers around my apartment use AirPlay (and for the one that isn't, I make it AirPlay enabled using shairport-sync). Mostly Apple's HomePods and a few sounders from Bose. Under the hood it creates a Docker container for each speaker and runs OwnTone. A directory of MP3 files is mounted as a volume in the containers and gets set up as the "music" library for OwnTone. The benefit of this approach is it lets me adjust the volume, audio file, play/pause state, etc. for each individual speaker.

Multi-Room Audio Setup
I have a few rooms in my house which I have audio, but they are far enough apart that I won't be trying to stream to all at once. I am also a mostly Apple user, so I use Raspberry Pi's with Hifiberry AMP2 and shairport-sync (AirPlay target). I can select any of the Pi's as the speaker output on any Apple device. There's also a pre-made Raspberry Pi distribution called pi music box which also offers other protocols than AirPlay.
