Google forces use of Play Billing Library 5 but fails to keep their own sample reference projects up to date
According to the official documentation (https://developer.android.com/google/play/billing/integrate), sample references implementations of the library can be found on https://github.com/android/play-billing-samples/issues.

Migrating to Google Play Billing Library 5
If you’re not using RevenueCat for Android in-app subscriptions, migrating from PBL4 to 5 involves multiple steps. We’ll share the highlights and most important changes you’ll need to make here, but you’ll find more details in Google’s integration guide, and billing specific samples on GitHub.

Offering a pro version of an app. Are there best practices or tips?
I found the Trivial Drive samples very helpful when implementing my subscription functionality. Check them out here: https://github.com/android/play-billing-samples
- Can my app reliably detect refunded apps/features?

For those of you who implemented IAP in their apps — are there any easy ways of doing this?
Google has implementation at https://github.com/android/play-billing-samples/blob/master/TrivialDriveKotlin/app/src/main/java/com/sample/android/trivialdrivesample/billing/BillingDataSource.kt

Okay but are you doing all this Signature verification thing like it is described in their Sample? Because this was once part of the official documentation and I was surprised that I could not find it anymore (except in the Github samples).
- Is this an okay way of implementing Google billing in my app? Am I missing anything?
-
Is it possible to have our own backend server to verify whether a user is a paid user, if the user previously purchased using Google in-app billing API?
Here is a sample you can follow on how to implement your backend -> https://github.com/android/play-billing-samples/tree/master

Making a PRO/Paid version of a free app?
My recommendations is to add the paid features to the app you already have and integrate IAP. Take a look at the sample app here https://github.com/android/play-billing-samples. It's pretty straightforward to integrate when you don't have to deal with server verification of your purchases.
