  XMPP messaging works very well, but like someone else said, you won't get notifications, when your phone is in sleep mode. Only calls and SMS will wake up the phone. I have made a small script some weeks ago to work around this problem (it doesn't solve it, it's really just a dirty workaround): https://github.com/milky-sway/pinephone-scripts

  I made a script called 'sleepwalk' to put the phone to sleep, when the the screen is turned off. This will also work, if waydroid is in use: https://github.com/milky-sway/pinephone-scripts
