Kernel is indeed the reification of this earliest Lisp aspect, into a language resembling Scheme, which itself was an exploration of the actor variety of this idea. Fexprs were a great source of controversy: originally banished by Kent Pitman in 1980 and dealt another theoretical blow by Wand, there hasn't been such a refutation of Shutt's work so I think it holds up. Sadly, it appears Shutt died last year, so it is left to us to carry on the torch of the fexpr. I wrote a tiny Lisp implementation based on his vau calculus earlier this year, and I find the additional expressiveness as promised, though have since strayed more towards Kay's line of thinking.
