Streaming from shared folders
You can just use the music player app from your android phone to connect your jellyfin. Such as gelli or finamp
-
What do you wish you could self-host?
You could try Jellyfin as a media server, it has various Android apps that can stream from it that work quite well. I haven't made up my mind yet which one I prefer, so I use both interchangeably: Gelli and Finamp.

What self-hosted apps are worth paying for?
That's true, Plex has been around a long time and it's on a lot of devices. I've been using Gelli (https://github.com/dkanada/gelli) as a music player for JellyFin on my phone for a while now and it's great.
-
Is there any "Spotify-like" self-hosted music streaming software?
I use both. In the web browser, I prefer Navidrome because it's more lightweight. For native mobile client, I use Gelli with Jellyfin and Subtracks with Navidrome. However, I prefer Gelli to Subtracks for its UI and features.
-
Does anyone else use Jellyfin? How do you like it over Plex?
Highly recommend one of the dedicated music apps for music playback on mobile, I use Finamp and have used Gelli in the past.
-
Best android phone music app for JellyFin?
If your brother isn't fan of the interface, and is willing to sideload, Gelli has some customization and is generally more polished in terms of animations and interations. It's also on F-Droid, an alternative to the play store, here. It does not have offline mode which can be a dealbreaker.

Jellyfin: The Free Software Media System
I also use Finamp for audio streaming (or local, downloaded playback). It's a good app, but still lacking a lot of features other audio players have, like rearranging the play queue. I'd suggest also trying [Gelli](https://github.com/dkanada/gelli), which seems to be a more mature app for music playback.
- Please share your experience migrating away from Plex?

if Plex Shut down will you all move to Jellyfin or Emby ?
There are a few for jellyfin, Gelli being the one I use

Jellyfin - The Free Software Media System
And Gelli
For music, there are some good 3rd-party options. Gelli is from one of the Jellyfin team members, Finamp is a new Flutter based app that supports both Android and iOS, and S2 Music Player (successor to Shuttle) supports Jellyfin, Emby, and local files.

Gentle reminder: Jellyfin is built by volunteer workers, so consider donating your time to the project if you can
dknada: He does some great work on Jellyfin and it's also the person behind Gelli, a native android music player for JF. Github Sponsors

New here and loving it. I have some questions and recommendations
I'll suggest Jellyfin as a solution since I spend a bunch of time working on it :) I have a native Android app called Gelli with most of the stuff you'd want in a music player, sans fully offline playback for now. There is an absolutely insane amount of music clients, many of which are much more modern than the *sonic clients I used in the past.
