Euro firms must ditch Uncle Sam's clouds and go EU-native
We've been using Scaleway's compute, RDS and S3 offerings for Ente[1]'s cloud offering for over 5 years now.
RDS backups and retrivals from cold storage[2] are both a lot slower than AWS. The "high-availablity" instances for RDS are in the same DC, so the feature is cosmetic. Ignoring these, our experience has been pretty good. Quality of support is great.

While linking to [2] I realised that Scaleway's own website is behind Cloudflare, which is disappointing given they have their own DDoS protection[3].

Android users can now use conversational editing in Google Photos
^ is what I used to import ~300gb of photos from Google Photos to Immich. Not sure how well it works for iCloud.
There is also https://ente.io/ which is a private & secure photo backup app that you don't need to self-host.

The Future Is Not Self-Hosted
There's Immich https://immich.app/ and https://ente.io/ which are both E2E encrypted and not locked to any ecosystem (besides, e.g. Apple only has E2E encryption when you have Advanced Data Protection enabled, and even then not on shared albums). So those apps are strictly an improvement (and I use them). I also do not have Facebook/Instagram/whatever else people are using that don't care about their own or related people's privacy.

Ask HN: What's the 2025 stack for a self-hosted photo library with local AI?
I currently use Ente as a secondary photo syncing service in addition to Google Photos.
While I really like it — snappy and encrypted — I was surprised by how much the missing Ultra HDR implementation affects me. Photos are currently synced with brightness information but not displayed with it. Therefore, one photo that looks great in Google Photos looks far less vivid in Ente.
For what it's worth, I found a discussion on Ultra HDR. It isn't exactly bursting with a desire to implement it, though:
