Can anyone recommend a good way to do this? I'm reading about Snapper which seems like it can do what I want, but I wanted to ask advice here first. Can btrfs use a separate disk for snapshots? Or do I need to use something like btrbk

The best tool that I found that not only handles snapshots but also transferring them to another location (thus taking a backup) is btrbk. I have been using it for a year now and I didn't have any problems creating or restoring backups.

btrbk is pretty nice for backing up entire btrfs filesystems. I'd tke a peek at that, it's trivial to write a config that you fire with a timer or cron job on a schedule.

I use a tool called BTRBK to manage all of this. It takes snapshots at specific intervals, and sends them to an offsite backup servers, hooks to take snapshots before/after events like host upgrades (and host system snapshots show up in the grub menu for easy rollbacks) and pruning of older snapshots. There is no GUI though. There is another popular tool called Snapper that does have a third party GUI last I looked it had less features and was more complex than BTRBK.

It's pretty limited tho.. btrbk is awesome.
  • Which is better practice for pacman hooks that utilize other programs?
    reddit.com/r/archlinux | 2021-05-03
The problem and my question centers around the fact that btrbk can have multiple profiles in a single configuration, such as the example in this subsection, and I am trying to figure out whether it'd be better to add a bunch of flag options in my program so the user would have to have the hook calling something like btrbk_logger --target /mnt/btr_backup/ --volume ssh://localhost:2201/mnt/btr_pool --subvolume data --snapshot_name vm01-data or adding one optional flag which tells my program to parse through the existing config file, looking for a string in comments that would tell the program which lines to parse out.
  • Leap 15.2 with Btrfs root: what's the best way to clone this drive such that both drives can be mounted and kept in sync?

Q3. Yes, using dd on a live system is not going to give you a consistent image, it's not what it's designed for (what can dd do for a file which is currently being written to? You can get away with it on simple file systems but not more complex ones). However with btrfs snapshots and btrfs send you could have a very similar but actually working setup, which can even store self-consistent historical snapshots in an efficient format. You can either roll your own setup or use a project like https://github.com/digint/btrbk. But this is backup not prevention of downtime, in the case of disk failure the backup would need some minor modifications to be bootable (change boot disk UUIDs).

What is the rsync section (line 24) about? Is it to check if there were changes, "do not backup if there are no file changes"? Or is this only relevant if you backup from a non-btrfs source (or to an non-btrfs source)?
