Trying to enter the biological field for over a year, little success so far
I know more about bioinformatics than wildlife biology. I think the field would embrace someone like you, since it's dominated by biology folk who have less familiarity with informatics and computer science independent of bioinformatics. I'd check out r/bioinformatics, the about page has some great intro resources, as well as this site that walks through some of the major tools https://sandbox.bio/ and this course that covers material in better depth https://github.com/quinlan-lab/applied-computational-genomics . Rosalind has a list of bioinformatics problems you can practice these concepts on in any programming language you prefer.
