About the bad responsiveness, are you on mac? The feature is pretty buggy on mac: there are memory leaks and it's not very well supported. I'm very slowly working on fixing the memory leaks but can't guarantee anything yet.
About how it "can sometimes break the running Emacs," I assume you're on MacOS? If so, this is most likely due to memory leaks that I am (very very slowly) working on. If you can share your experience with that (or have any advice) that'd be great! 😊
