Quaddicted Levels not going in order?
I recommend Simple Quake Launcher or it's newer iteration (though I only have experience with the first) since it seems to automatically load the custom start maps by adding +map start, maybe through the level pack's included config file or just by detecting the map named start. Completing a level should bring you back to the custom start map.

How do i add mods to quake?
another alternative way: quakespasm or quakespasm spiked for coop/arcane. put mods in your quake folder, then use this put it inside quake folder as well. you can launch mods easier with this tool instead of doing shortcuts.

Quake launchers
You don't need a launcher at all, you should be perfectly able to just run everything from the console or create a custom shortcut when necessary, wgich is very rarely. If you do want one though, SQL should be fine (there is SQL2 which you should probably be using btw). It's not "full of viruses" just because Windows Defender or whatever flags every .exe by default.

If you would like another launcher I recommend Simple Quake Launcher 2. I use that as my regular launcher and then Injector to browse and download stuff in the first place.

Does old Dark Places mod still work with the recent updated Bethesda.net's Quake 1?
I recommend using Simple Quake Launcher 2, which will handle all your custom engines, mods and maps. If you want to be able to launch this from Steam, put it in \Steam\steamapps\common\quake\, rename glquake.exe to openglquake.exe (or something else you can recognise), rename SQLauncer2.exe to glquake.exe, and then when you want to launch it select "Play Quake (original)", and it should start the launcher.

How to install and play Arcane Dimensions?
I use Simple Quake Launcher 2 to run mods, but you can also use Quake Injector, which will download and install them for you as well as running them.

A way to launch source ports using Steam?
Yes. The executable that Steam launches is called winquake.exe, so you can rename anything to that and it will launch that instead. You can either do this with your source port of choice, or you can use Simple Quake Launcher 2 to launch whatever source port (as well as mod, map and demo) you want.
