    Link target for Mastodon "share buttons"

    • The obvious solution is to ask the visitor to specify which instance to use, and there are several solutions available, ranging from a simple JavaScript prompt(), to ready-to-use pages that remember your last used server. But the existing solutions that I could find were either not very user-friendly, had suboptimal privacy, or both. So I did what one does: reinvent the wheel, and create yet another one. Tootpick is a single static HTML file with inline stylesheet and JavaScript, only 12 kB, and can be self-hosted or used via [https://tootpick.org/](tootpick.org). It is free software under the same license as Mastodon itself.
