Out of the box, this is arguably less secure than most other remote access solutions. With OpenVPN, as well as the certificate's private key, you would usually require user credentials or a TOTP. With SSH, usually you would password-encrypt your key file, and there is the popular Google Authenticator 2FA PAM module to add TOTP support.

Wireguard has very few solutions like this. The most popular ways people add a second factor is with solutions like Tailscale, which is publicly hosted, and far more complex than most homelabbers needs. There is an in-progress community re-implementation of Tailscale (headscale), but it's still rather complex, isn't yet feature-complete, or at a 1.0 release.
