Audiobooks have been a pain in the butt...I appreciate your suggestion. I did try Audiobookshelf and I think the reason I didn't go with it was me simply not liking the brown "bookcase" background. Instead I explored this guide https://github.com/seanap/Plex-Audiobook-Guide which lead me down a rabbit hole with a system that I never quite got perfected and really is not as automated as I would like. So I maybe I will put my personal tastes aside for the sake of functionality and reliability.
