The adoption of OCI over "index.yaml" is going to be a slow one (or not at all) for popular applications like ingress-nginx, kube-prometheus-stack, etc.. Once popular charts start adopting OCI I hope Renovate will be updated to able to work with Flux, I have a open issue here. This will make managing chart updates a breeze.
For example, if we look in the ingress-nginx repository (tag: helm-chart-4.3.0), we can see that the Chart.yaml specifies two different versions:
I recognize that it does not handle chart updates, but it's might still ease the burden of applying minor releases easily etc. For the chart versions themselves, unfortunately dependabot does not support this and will not, but something like renovatebot does. Could be worth looking into as a dual approach
