With that said, I'm not here to demerit VLC as a project as both work well enough as video players and target different audiences. mpv offers a streamlined user experience that can be infinitely expanded and customised to your heart's content (again just look at the manual and the available user scripts), it's much more powerful to the advanced users while still offering a simple experience to the most basic needs. VLC is a good middle ground for those who want a little more out of the GUI but are not that into video technology to actually need the options mpv gives you.
I know and i like that you can use external shaders to upscale a video on realtime real time so you can save network bandwith but again most people are scared of cli arguments and config files
