Once the React team did decide to rewrite the docs in 2020, they wanted to redo them from scratch both to teach function components + hooks as default, and have a much better and coherent tutorial sequence. That part I think was good, and I'm still fine with. (Where I have been frustrated is that it's taken way too long to complete the docs work, and that they've deliberately put off linking the new docs visibly on the old docs site for months even though the new docs are so much better despite being incomplete.)
