Take a look at OpenHPC if you don't know it yet. It has a OpenSUSE and a Rocky (CentOS) distro version. I think it assumes all compute nodes are equal, but it is worth a look, nonetheless.
At first I struggled a bit with DNS. then I made a front/name node using Jim Slater's recipe for a ubuntu router. So I started to understand how to configure iptables, dhcp ( isc-dhcp-server) DNS (bind9).
