Full disk encryption is rarely as portable as simply encrypting the files you need. When I ran a “homemade” NAS, I had everything LUKS encrypted. I used a Yubikey to unlock the encrypted data.
Fast forward some years, and I moved everything to the cloud. Running hardware at home costs money, and is prone to failing at the worst time. That increased the need for encryption, and I settled on two technologies. I used rclone along with its crypt “remote” to source encrypt everything before uploading.
