Automating it with PowerShell is definitely better than doing it manually. Depending on what you want to collect I wrote a monitoring tool, DBA Dash that will collect server information centrally - hardware information, configuration data etc. It will also keep track of changes automatically. It's also used to support DBA Checks and performance monitoring.
