I am maintainer of an open source APM product, SigNoz and we are seeing many people adopt opentelemetry for some of the reasons mentioned in comments below - vendor lock-in and future proof ness. Currently opentelemetry traces is in pretty mature state while metrics and logs are still under active development.

OP specifically mentioned APM, which is what maps to Tempo. If you wanted to go full Grafana for metrics and logs too, you can add in Mimir and Loki
