[Hobby Scuffles] Week of August 22, 2022 (Rules update + poll)

This page summarizes the projects mentioned and recommended in the original post on /r/HobbyDrama

Our great sponsors
  • InfluxDB - Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale
  • WorkOS - The modern identity platform for B2B SaaS
  • SaaSHub - Software Alternatives and Reviews
  • neocities

Neocities.org - the web site. The entire thing. Yep, we're completely open source.

  • So hey, anyone into web design as a hobby? Recently learned about Neocities as a hosting platform (pretty sure the name is an intentional reference to the old Geocities). You can make a website for free or otherwise pay $5 a month for a few extra perks, like using a custom domain if you already own one.

  • Publii

The most intuitive Static Site CMS designed for SEO-optimized and privacy-focused websites.

  • But then I don't know what to pick with that either! Is Publii any good? It seems like what I'd like to use (especially with being able to generate the HTML files on my own computer instead of having to work on an existing server like WordPress) but maybe I'd be better off getting something more well-known. :u

  • InfluxDB

Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale. Get real-time insights from all types of time series data with InfluxDB. Ingest, query, and analyze billions of data points in real-time with unbounded cardinality.

  • GrapesJS

Free and Open source Web Builder Framework. Next generation tool for building templates without coding

  • You could use GrapesJS (https://grapesjs.com) to create your website. It's an open-source Wysiwyg editor that can export a zip archive with all the site files, ready to host them in any of the free static hosting solutions out there (Netlify, CloudFlare Pages, Github Pages, Neocities, etc.).

  • gutenberg

A fast static site generator in a single binary with everything built-in. https://www.getzola.org

  • for neocities part of the appeal is that people just make old school personal sites with html and css. dont worry too much about making it super polished. if you must use some extra tooling, maybe try a static site generator. most people like hugo. i prefer zola but ultimately theyre all pretty similar.
