I'll use my team's password manager as a case study here. I'm a network engineer, and we're (mostly) using pass. Why solutions like LastPass and Hashicorp Vault don't work is mostly out of scope, but the relevant bit is that we need access to these passwords on our local machines, and we need sharing mechanisms that are team based and easily auditable. Neatly wrapped pgp and git do this surprisingly well.
For secure communications, you should prioritize something with forward secrecy. When you need something asynchronous, it's better to go with something with less attack surface that's less error prone. age was created for just that. For signing, better to use SSH signatures or signify.
