Apparently Unity's built-in networking stack doesn't effectively handle large numbers of concurrent players sending data between all of the clients (the sort of thing that's pretty important for a MMO) and none of the existing tools would work for what they're trying to do -- for example, Mirror only scales to about 1K concurrent users.
