The missing piece of the puzzle is autocomplete. From here, I understand nvim-cmp is the suggested option and I tried to set it up, using the snippets given there.
I don't know if looking at my config will help but it's worth a shot as I too recently shifted from a vimscript config to lua and I'm not lua expert but have managed to get most things working. I see you got an answer to your solution. Might be worth checking out https://astronvim.github.io/ or other preconfiguration. Might help make your journey easier to see how they set it up.
