  • Since it was a required upgrade anyway: any needed changes could be done more cleanly with at hard-forking change instead. This is the strategy that Bitcoin Cash used. Bitcoin Cash implemented the Segwit quadratic hashing fix as "replay protection". That means that technically: it safer to raise the blocksize on BCH when compared to to BTC. The quadratic hashing transactions (read: denial of service) transactions are still allowed on the BTC chain, but prohibited on the BCH chain.
