There's a guide here on how to root it. Unfortunately despite being rooted for several years people haven't done a ton of things with it. I just rooted mine because I wanted to see how the system worked, and then planned to build an open version of the hub, before I learned about diyHue which pretty much does that, yet for some reason isn't super well known about.
Re-enable OPKG and install various packages from the official repository. There's already a lot you could do just with that.
