Here's a snap of my finder. You just need to press CMD while moving it around in the title bar. Apparently, you can pin apps and not just folders. In the image below, I've pinned ImageOptim and PDFSqueezer. Now, I just need to drag my image or pdf files and it opens directly.

If you have an application with all its windows minimized , then Cmd + Tab won't unminimize it. Just move your focus to the app, then hold Opt, then release Cmd. This will fire up the most recent window of the app. This behaviour is weird, so I recommend to Hide the application (using Cmd + H) instead of minimizing. Or you could use an app like Alt-Tab. This will allow you to view windows instead of applications, like in windows, which means that you can fire up minimized windows as well. Furthermore, you don't have to use cmd + shift + tab to move backward. It's very customizable.
