If that’s not your bag then I’d look into using Vial, which allows you to modify your layout graphically and immediately. Even though I can code this in QMK, I’m using Vial here as it allows me to tinker and tweak far more easily. I’m actually not sure how to do a “simple” setup with Vial — all my boards are hardwired/modified — but I think what you can do is download the VIA firmware and install it on your Preonic and Vial will work with it.

Yeah, Num Pad and Symbols layer, with numbers on the left and symbols on the right, mostly in the equivalent shifted position (like Miryoku although with a few tweaks).
I’m not using it on this board, but I did put together a whole mnemonic system for remembering where symbols were on a small board.
