This is a problem with NPM not Homebridge. The Homebridge devs can't really control what NPM serves as results. It's not like the Homebridge devs can tell NPM which plugins to remove and which ones to endorse. When you search for a plugin through Homebridge's own web UI (which is where you should be installing plugins from anyways) it does show you which results are verified by displaying a "verified" symbol right next to the entry. You don't even need to click on the entry. You can also see a list of all verified plugins here. LifX only has one plugin that's verified, so it's pretty clear for a user who searches for "LifX" using the plugin search built into Homebridge UI which plugin they should install.
It looks much harder than it really is. If you’re not planning on using the Raspberry Pi for anything else, you can follow this guide and install the HomeBridge image onto it. After that you can use the web UI to install plugins and configure them right from the UI without having to edit files.
