The vifm scripts that make it work with Ueberzug that I use are provided here (taken from someone else). I don't know much about the whole named pipe thing or whatever, but it seems like all that's really needed is a program that will parse info from something like json, bash, etc., throw that info into the pipe, and have the program read from the pipe to display the image.
swayimg was also mentioned, but it seems to be a viewer (i.e., expects user's input) rather than a previewer which is needed here, but maybe there is a way to use it with some inconvenience. It does suggest that something like Ueberzug can be implemented for Wayland.
