iio-sensor-proxy is installed and running monitor-sensor shows the rotation events. Things worked out of the box on ubuntu 21.10 (gnome 40.1) , but after upgrading to ubuntu 22.04 (gnome 42) it stopped. The extension gnome-shell-extension-screen-autorotate is still being worked on for 42 support: https://github.com/kosmospredanie/gnome-shell-extension-screen-autorotate/pull/8 . Would be nice if it was officially under gnome support.
