How do I go about QMK and my board?

I think that's my biggest point on confusion at the moment: what fork am I grabbing? Grabbing the config.h from the link that leads to this, VOID9 , is that what I need? Last I did that, I wasn't presented with a hex file so I was rather lost.

  A 3x3 handwired macropad, running QMK firmware

I'm looking to build the following as a test build, VOID9 Macropad and still unclear as to what it is I need to grab in order for the firmware to speak correctly to the controller. There's a lot of "forks", and I'm not entirely sure what's what or how QMK reads it.
