When it was online, we would get the lab handout in the beginning of each week. We would then be able to start working on it throughout the week, but people usually wait until after the professor explained the instructions in more details in the the last 30 minutes of the lecture of that week (Friday). We would use the logisim-evolution-3.3.0-all.jar simulator to build circuits every week, and present our working circuits to the TA during our 10-minute presentation time slot.
