If you're developing for Linux, some folks like using VS Code and its ability to interact with a Linux environment via ssh. If your development isn't too platform-specific, developing on Darwin (that is, macOS, but only the Unix parts) is fairly pleasant--and keeping your code portable is a good way to use platform differences to ferret out undefined behavior. The usual terminal-hosted tools work, and VimR is a good Cocoa-hosted front end for neoVim. Emacs also works fairly well in its Cocoa-hosted incarnation.
