Have you looked at Rainbow? It bills itself as Rainbow Parentheses Improved. It was last updated 8 months ago so I would say not defunct.

The only lua plugin I am familiar with is nvim-ts-rainbow, looks like it has performance issues and I think this is probably one of the few times treesitter doesn't make much sense.
