While I understand that there's some boilerplate there, IMO the syntactic sugar elision !! doesn't really add anything of value. In fact, the non-sugared version has the benefit of requiring you to explicitly document how nulls should be handled. The fact that they struggled to find a sensible, workable syntax for it (https://github.com/dotnet/csharplang/blob/main/meetings/2022/LDM-2022-04-13.md) strongly suggests that it's just not a good fit at the compiler level.
