To put an example, in the Pokémon ROM Hacking Scene there was a bit of a similar situation with a project called "Pokémon Crystal Clear" created by a guy nicknamed ShockSlayer. It was kind of revolutionary for being this open world hack with neat features such as following pokémon, created using the open source disassembly project of Pokémon Crystal, Pokecrystal and also using code written by different people that was open source as well.
