If you want a free messaging app, that's relatively simple, you can try Matrix. Matrix is the protocol, and then there are multiple clients built on top of it. I personally use Element. Messages in DMs are end-to-end encrypted, and they don't have that pesky 8mb upload limit. They've also got video and voice calls, as well as screen share.
I'm not familiar with teamspeak, sorry. Last time I used it was way over a decade ago. Signal is free, open source, e2e encrypted and apparently also has a group system (with call and chat function). Maybe that would be a hassle-free alternative if you just want to stay in touch with your friends.
