Maybe check out Gecko Linux if you want some nice defaults. It's basically an installer for openSUSE, so you end up with the same thing as if you did it all yourself. I didn't use it, but I hear it's a pretty good set of defaults.
Using it on both my desktop with dual boot and my VPS (https://github.com/elitak/nixos-infect <- use this to turn any machine running a fresh instance of Debian, Ubuntu and friends into a NixOS machine in one line of Bash).
