I have a TrueNAS server storing my files. I would like a Raspberry Pi to automatically backup this server using Rsync. Is this the way to go? And how fast would the Pi need to be? All Pi 4's are sold out or crazy expensive.

  • BorgBackup

Deduplicating archiver with compression and authenticated encryption.

  • As for rsync, while it is a great tool for synchronization, it is not a great backup tool, at least not on its own. Instead you should probably look at something like Duplicacy or Kopia (though Kopia is still beta, so YMMV) or even the good old Borgbackup.

  • kopia

Cross-platform backup tool for Windows, macOS & Linux with fast, incremental backups, client-side end-to-end encryption, compression and data deduplication. CLI and GUI included.

  • As for rsync, while it is a great tool for synchronization, it is not a great backup tool, at least not on its own. Instead you should probably look at something like Duplicacy or Kopia (though Kopia is still beta, so YMMV) or even the good old Borgbackup.

  • restic

    Fast, secure, efficient backup program

  • I used to use crashplan but they have started to suck so now I have settled on a replacement, restic. This software is fantastic and I've been running my backups with restic for a few months. I'm about to cancel crashplan for good. Cant say enough good things about it.

NOTE: The number of mentions on this list indicates mentions on common posts plus user suggested alternatives. Hence, a higher number means a more popular project.
