You may find it useful (I find it highly invaluable) to work on your high-level design skills. For this I prefer PlantUML to produce C4 Model diagrams. See C4 Model (watch the video), C4-PlanetUML, intro. This gives your project an overall 'plan'. You're not just writing some graphics logic; you're creating an application ecosystem with which players interact. It should be well-documented.
I tried going the "separate repos for client and server" route but ended up unifying this for simplicity. Much happier with this setup. This is a good description of how to achieve it.
