Trying to learn: Is sending BTC to a hot wallet, then disconnecting that computer from the internet entirely, effectively the same level of security as a hardware wallet?

  • electrum

    Electrum Bitcoin Wallet

  • Create a cold wallet (open source like e.g. electrum) on a fresh OS and then go offline for ever. Format and override the hard disk. Before right down the seed and some addresses and the information that it's an electrum.org seed or whatever you chose (if you want right down as well the private keys). Send BTC to this cold wallet and monitor the balances via an explorer through TOR browser. Secure the seed and other information well against theft, fire, water etc. and don't tell the world that you own bitcoin.

  • bip39

A web tool for converting BIP39 mnemonic codes

  • Use a program that is open source and has been verified by the community. I haven't used any windows programs yet, most of my generators were javascript web based and the code is very small, accessible and to the point. I was using this years ago https://iancoleman.io/bip39/ but not sure if its still good or up to date with the latest tech. I know you need something different if you are doing Lightning. Do your own research and verification.
