I use my own custom theme Photon which is based on Paramount.
I did quite a bit of colorscheme-jumping when I started until I found one that ticked almost every checkbox for me: sorcerer. I then spent a couple years with it, tweaking things here and there, until I finally decided to tick the remaining checkboxes myself and release my own version, Apprentice.

I like Apprentice and base16-gruvbox-dark-hard but I have a lot of trouble sticking to one colorscheme and end up switching fairly often.
I prefer rigel.
I wrote my own theme that I call Plasticflower. TBH, I think most people would find it gaudy and I intend to write a new theme at some point. However, I found it a good exercise, understanding how to themes are written, and I recommend it. (Imgur is being a butt and won't let me upload screenshots.)
