rclone is a bit like rsync, but aims to connect to any cloud storage provider, including Google Photos and Google Drive. I can "easily" download your files from the cloud provider, or upload files, or many other features. The interface is command-line, which can look intimidating for some users.
Currently only use Photos on my mac to manage these photos. In the long run I plan to host my own cloud for this (probably on PhotoPrism with NextCloud but also check immich, here's a good roundup of the alternatives of Google Photos). The photos are temporarily backed up to OneDrive. It's working but far less streamlined.
