I'd note that Ubuntu's versions of software often lag terribly behind the originals, so I often make quick-and-dirty .deb files of more up-to-date versions: for instance, https://github.com/phlummox-dev/restic-deb has an up-to-date version of restic which interoperates well with rclone (whereas the stock version in Ubuntu 18.04 doesn't).
I use backupninja to coordinate my Linux backups - it's pretty easy to use, has a nice menu-driven TUI system for adding new periodic backups, allows you to add any custom backup script you like, and ensures you get nice log messages and email alerts about failed backups. However: there doesn't seem to have been any activity on the repo for it for the last 12 months, so I've made a friendly fork to fix some of the recent bugs people have spotted, here.
For remote backups: I used to use tarsnap ("Online backups for the truly paranoid"), but have found it to be a little more trouble than it's worth. I now just create remote restic+rclone repositories on a DigitalOcean cloud VM ($5 US per month, for the cheapest), and offsite backups get pushed there. I've tried other online backup solutions, but found I either didn't use most of the features they offered, or they weren't sufficiently flexible.
Also: it's not exactly a backup solution, but for working on multiple computers, I've found Syncthing very handy. It's like Dropbox, but open source, and is multiplatform (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android plus others).
An upvote for restic (which /u/Baker0052 mentioned) and for rclone (which /u/Biervampir85) mentioned.
